Ok, for context, I'm still pretty new at this game, started last year with lessons from a pro who helped me work up amazing skills with my 9 iron! But I haven't taken hands-on lessons since. I do practice a lot at the driving range and play frequently -- my workplace has a 9-hole links style golf course nearby with discounts for employees, so my sunday bag with the basics is almost always in my trunk. That said, I'm still learning the game and still learning the right feel for each club swing. That's important to me, so these training tools always make me wary -- is it going to inculcate bad habits that then will be challenging to break? So, I was at the range yesterday and saw this little ball in my practice bag pocket and was reminded about trying it out. First, I warmed up hitting a few balls each with my 4 hybrid and 3 wood, nice and straight, longish -- in the 110-130 range -- with good arch and height. So, I thought, let me try my driver now that I'm warmed up and feeling the swing. It's my driver that I struggle with most (aside from my putter, but that's a different story for another day :)). I took a few swings that were not straight, back to my left slice (I'm a lefty). Tried to correct, but now shanking to the right. Just trying to get on the fairway, not worried about distance.I thought, well, if this isn't a good time to give this product a try, then I don't know what would be. I took out this little magic ball (it's slightly smaller than a normal ball so you don't accidentally launch it down the fairway), applied a thin layer to the face of my driver, and with the next several swings I immediately noticed a reduction in the left slice (I'm a lefty). They were all now fairway shots. It felt easy and raised my confidence to try to hit with a bit more oomph to get more distance and height. Straighter shots. What was really interesting, not sure of the physics, but the roll was noticeably reduced. I rely a lot on the roll after the ball hits, that's what allows me to get a few extra yards out of my standard shots. My range with the driver is between 120-150, from tee to impact but if I can get another 10-20 yards of roll, then that's really helpful. It's rare, except on a short hole, for me to land from tee to green so I appreciate the roll to allow me a chance at getting par. But applying this to my driver reduced the roll. The shots were noticeably more consistently on the fairway, but with minimal roll. I only get that with my wedge... the distance of the shot from tee to landing didn't compensate, the shots did not go from 150 to the 170 range, so am I better off with this product? Yes, for fairway shots. I'll have to see about the rest.I do worry about how well this works and whether using it will foster me feeling ok with what aren't well-formed shots, developing bad habits but being ok with the results thanks to this product. Hmmm...What I also noticed, as a cool little side benefit of this ointment, is that it lets me see the impact of the ball on my club face. Balls leave a slight impact imprint on the lube though I applied it really thinly. Between shots, I looked for the imprint on the club face, wiped it to clear the imprint, and adjusted my swing/grip/alignment accordingly, then checked for the imprint of that ball. Wipe, repeat. That was an added help which might counteract my concern that it would allow me to feel ok about shots that are the result of bad swings since it let me see where the ball hit my clubface and to adjust my swing accordingly.Overall, it's a neat little thing to have and use, either as many of the commenters have noted, to improve your game with your golf-pals, or to raise confidence in your skills, or to help with learning how you're hitting and what the immediate impact is without worrying about slicing or shanking. Seems a reasonable price.
